RTA and Google maps

2 03 2010

Google RTA alliance

Well you be surprised if you find it difficult to navigate under the provided maps given by RTA. I found it non-user friendly and it’s shame for one of the world’s most expensive transportation not to have user freindly map until now.

Google has incorporated the RTA transporation map in its Google maps. You can visit the gulf news site for brief tutorial here.

Update: Google has teamed up with RTA and decided to show the RTA bus stops on Google Earth (seperate software ) which is a great software for visualization of the landmarks located within Dubai.

Now you can use Google Transit website to plan you trip even in Dubai, great move by RTA to incorporate into the Google maps.

Waiting for the rainy day

1 03 2010

I was stuck yesterday for 2 hours on Emirates Rd E311 between Sharjah – Dubai road for 3 hours at night from 12:30 am to 3:15 a.m. I tried taking the exit but it was jammed by cars which had broken down as they were partially submerged in water.  The rainfall was the heaviest in 12 months, given the evidence of extent of damage. I once asked a municipality director in Sharjah (located in northern emirates) why is the city not investing in proper drainage system. His reply was “It rains only 2 months in a year in UAE so I guess it is no use allocating resource to it.”  It was lackadaisiacal reply and the same year in 2008 it rained cats and dogs flodding most of the industrial area of Sharjah and costing millions of dollars of damage which coud have been averted had they noticed the extent of loss flooding causes to the economy.

Broken down car (Dubai)

The same approach can be seen in business decisons. One decision I remember from my friend Andrew who formed lucrative business with a partner. I asked him if he had the papers which clearly stated his assests in place, he said he “knew and trusted his friend and partner” and had genterman’s agreement with him.  One of my guru once said, “Pulled by women and world strengths of friendships at times slowly wither away”. Andrew had hard time claiming his assets once the alliance dissolved. His partner was smart man and got some credible paperwork and lawyer to claim most of the assets of the businesses they had which comes down to moral of the story –

have contingency plans and look the big picture , what if this incidence happens , what will be the extent of damage? is it worth investing on the solution or prevention plan? According to news sources, there have been 170 accidents resulting in 4 deaths and causing millions of dirhams of damage to economy plus government has to pay for drainage of water. There have been reports that there will be more rain…government didn’t announce any initaitives to prevent the mess …….so they are still waiting for rainy day.

Fry or Die!

19 02 2010

Before you continue reading the post,  I want to show you a small video of shuttle taking off.

Note tons of fuel being burned when shuttle is taking off, note the sonic boom it makes when it goes faster than sound, note the shuttle going at very high speeds more than escape velocity i.e 11.7 km/s  to escape  earth’s gravity, note the debris falling and then, the tiles burning at very high temperature due to high air resistance  and then…. BOOM! It escapes into the space !. There is no resistance there. You must be wondering what is the reference of this video with this post?

To better understand what I am going to explain let me quote Albert Einstein “God does not play dice!” What did he actually mean? He meant God didn’t just randomly decide that you shall become a great speaker, or you shall will Miss universe or I shall win “best blogger” in Technorati competition. It is not random and it is not by chance people become successful.

Over the years I have been lucky to meet many successful people in their fields, I found most were of average intelligence, average looking people who came from middle class or poor background. but they were average people with non-average or extraordinary results. Why were they different? Were they lucky? Did they have any secret? For one year when I was doing a tour around North America, I met many musicians, entrepreneurs and speakers best in their respective fields. I was interested in hearing their stores BEFORE they became successful. What did they do, what did they think and after meeting over 50 successful people, I found there was a trend or phase they went through in climbing to success which I am going to pass to you today for free.

Eureka graph

The trend is basically shown in the graph above which shows effort vs time and the analogy to space shuttle is also shown. Note all of us follow the first part of graph, for example any skill we learned like walking when we were kids, to driving, to dancing we followed a methodical procedure in learning. Take public speaking for example, you were aware of the need to improve our speaking or leadership skills. Your desire to improve increased when you saw great speakers as Malcolm X or Martin Luther King speak, you said “Yeah I want to be that guy, I want to speak like him“.  You then asked yourselves a question “How do I become one?” and focused on mastering speaking. You read books, asked your friends for solutions and somehow you took time to research and then join a apeaker’s club.  Some became Certified speaker by completing 10 projects focusing, relearning and then applying but here is the difference, some of us will go on to become best speaker in district, by country or the world…will it be by chance? Luck? What is the difference between successful and wannabe?

This is the important part of the post ….. I asked one successful entrepreneur who sold everything to fund his business, lost his fiance of 2 years before he hit success, suffered from very painful ailment , failed deal after deal. I asked him “How did you know you will make it?” He stared at me and said ” I believed in myself and threw myself out there. Fry or Die trying”! That’s the X-factor, that persistence, that UMPFff that seperates the winner and wanted to bes. FRY WITH FEAR OR DIE TRYING!

The main difference between successful and wannabes is the region between Action and Peak is the place very close to success where self doubt creeps in , people say “I think I wont be able to make it” “I am not good enough” they loose money, friends, health or some great obstacle hits them and they let go of the grip and fall from peak letting their dreams die. Only few people make it to the other end , reach the tipping point or have that eureka moment then everything becomes easy for them.

Success steps

For some example ever wondered why 20% of people in USA own 80% of wealth? You see rich people hang out with other rich people in clubs, golf etc and let others know of the deals. As a result rich become richer and the schism between rich and poor increases.. 80% of millionaires in States are first born millionaires i.e they didnt inherit their wealth, they earned it. Was is by luck or chance? Now you have the answer.

Tipping point

Here is Amit Mehta, who took two years of intensive effort to become millionaire. Here he is explaining the phase he went through. The graph looks familiar isnt it?

Persistence is the key to get to the other side” – Amit Mehta

History is full of stories of leaders who showed great persistence and moved forward.

O People ! Where can you flee? The sea is behind you, and the enemy in front of you: There is nothing for you, by God, except for truth and strength of character.
-Tariq ibn Ziyad (great Moor conqerer of Spain) (burned his ships and moved to conquer Spain)

I can summarize the lessons of my life in seven words: never give in; never, never give in.”
Winston Churchill

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent” President Coolidge

Making your first million dollars is hard” – Harv Eker (entreprenuer who failed many times before hitting big)

What I have revealed you today may not be a secret recipe to success but understanding the mindset of successful people, helps to better understand the phase when you yourself or your friend will undertake the mission in life. Now you know the three word advice you will give when you see somebody down who has sacrificed everything, thinking of giving up after being so close to success, you place hand of their shoulder , look them in the eye and comfort them by saying – FRY OR DIE!

You are bigger than your problem

10 02 2010

ow many times have you heard “If only I had enough money…. “If only I had good health…. “If times were better…” “If only I could live my life over again. You may have said it or heard from a friend. The problem is when we are in trouble we simulate in our minds of big trouble ahead. Below is the picture of you surrounded by the “Problem”.

You surrounded by problem

Instead if we just concentrated on solutions even for a moment, you will find ways to deal with the problems.

Today I am going how to set your fears aside and conquer them which has been told to me by people successful in their fields.

When we are in trouble we think of trouble in minds and rethink the consequences and indulge in it. Your mind will then pick up only the worse case scenarios. Worrying is a form of meditation used in negative form.

Instead if you focus even for a fraction of time on the solutions and write down possible solutions for the problems you are facing, then u r going to experience change in vision and your world will change. Imagine this sentence “YOU ARE BIGGER THAN YOUR PROBLEM”.

You are BIGGER than your problem!

To live free in spirit, you must be willing to face your fears and let go of anything that limits your life. The attachment to comfort or security is what limits us to do things in life to set us free. My friend was a single father years back with less resource or income. His dream was to travel the world and have an adventure. He did this without earning substantial wealth. Do you know how much he earns in a year to travel 25+ countries? Around 30,000 dollars, drives 12 yr old honda and gets hair cut from his sister in law and he does all what millionaire does. Why? Because he faced his fears and met freedom on the other side.

So next tie you are in trouble , look trouble in the eye and say “I WILL BE BIGGER THAN YOU!

Discovering DNA blue print of your Goals

15 01 2010

This is what I have drawn in the end of the day after reading how to make goals.

Goal Setting Schematics

The above picture is self explanatory. All your goals must be value based. Why? As human beings we are socially programmed and if you want something emotionally and to prevent any conflict with other areas of life it is vital to have a list of your values. Values are like power house of emotions which motivates you and are  heart and soul for your goals.  As Roy Disney said “It is not hard to make decisions once you have written down your values”.

I started with my list of values then I thought I needed more to expand it so I used Steve Pavlina’s list of values which is very comprehensive.

How do you find your values?

Best time to make a list is the time you rise and before you go to sleep. Values must be abstract as concrete values can and may lead to conflict. Some people find it easier to write down goals then track it back to values.  I divide my values into Personal, Health, Career, Financial, Social and Spiritual.  From here I make a list of values which I then take each component and compare and contrast and rate agains each other. One question that my help you is to ask “What  is important to me in this social area? Then “What else is important to me in social area? After making a list and prioritizing them , merge them together and then reprioritize to get the final list. Now you have got DNA blueprint  for your goals.

Some advice

Note that I compared with a freind and he put “Money” as  his top value. I asked to write down all the perceptions (feelings, visual, smell, etc) he would expereince after becoming rich. he wrote them down to detail and then I asked him to close his eyes and visualize him achieving the riches and enjoying every minute of being millionaire. He said he was happy but not “was missing something” or not satisfied. You see Money wasn’t meant to be “ends” value goal but a as a process of providing or achieving your other ‘ends”  value like “making difference” may be in research of cancer cure or discovery of some breakthrough.

Flexible priorities

Make your priorites flexible so it can change when the context of our life changes. Example, you are lonely so you make “camaraderie” your top priority list.  Review your values every week and change your goals accordingly.

Clarify Values

It is very important to clarify your values before you move to heavily implement your goals. Making goals without clarifying values is like taking a wrong ma of the place and running up and downthe place and finally saying “This is not what I wanted”

As Brian Tracey said ” Life is lived from the inside out. The very core of your personality is your values. Your values are what make you the person you are. Everything you do on the outside is dictated and determined by your values on the inside, whether clear or fuzzy.”

A high dose of inspiration.

7 01 2010

Just before the new year’s eve I saw the video of a friend whom I haven’t met in 2 years but the inspiration he gave through a gift surely made his presence felt. I pass on the readers the gift which will change the way you thing of life.

In the video is a friend named Jesse Wong who is an avid dancer, speaker, traveller, artist and other talents hidden in him. I was reading a book named “The Way of Superior Man” and one of the chapters  talks about men seeking freedom. It read “Your basic motivation is to be released from constraint and experience the freedom on the other side.” Every activity we love to do example travelling, singing, dancing and praying has one core reason that we do. It is to make us free from routines of our lives- physically, emotionally and spiritually – we travel because we want discover and break free from physical limitations, we dance and play to experience emotional spikes, we pray to free ourselves spiritually and conciously.

“Life is either daring adventure or nothing” said by Helen Keller is the advice my friend,  Jesse Wong followed years ago when things , limitations of life were holding him back like many of us here. We do activities to release from constraints and experience the freedom on the other side. But many of us cant release ourselves from constraints and lead a routine life. Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains said by Jean Roussaeu. What is that limitation and how can we break free?

Jesse in his words from his blog a miraculous thing happened one day – I looked within myself and realized I was creating my unhappiness.  I realized I was the source of frustration –  and in short,  that was the start of how I became younger as I grew older.” Fast forward years you will see his experiences, his freedom all the results are compiled to one video – “Everyone’s free” on Sun screen song which inspired all of my friends and I am sure will inspire you too. One tip: carefully listen to the lyrics of the song.
